Discussion: Which social media accounts do you use?

If you did a pre-test, you can use the results to get the conversation going. Hold a conversation with learners and ask what social media accounts they use and how they like to use them

Social media account settings

Review what sort of information is shared on social media, and what information may be revealed about social media users

Discussion: Your personal information, online

Hold a conversation with learners about what they’ve seen posted online that they feel might make the person who posted it vulnerable to privacy and security issues

Best practices for managing social media accounts

Review best practices for protecting personal information on social media. Briefly pause after each slide to see if anyone has anything else to add or any questions

Activity: Managing your social media account settings

Make sure learners have their guided handouts. Break them into small groups. Have them work through the handout to identify their social media accounts and make a plant for strengthening their social media account security

Review a list of other digital safety best practices to use in conjunction with private browsers for a more secure online experience

Activity: Testing out private browsing

Put your learners into small groups. Give everyone the guided handout and have them record their responses there. Have your learners run searches in both private and non-private browsers. Encourage your learners to reflect on the differences between their browsers – does the private browser seem to know less personal information about them? What is happening to their search results or ads?
