About This Module

This curriculum module is based on takeaways from series two of NYC Digital Safety training videos. You may use this module by:

  • Including it in your pre-existing public workshops
  • Combining it with other NYC Digital Safety modules to make a longer data-privacy focused workshop
  • Sharing the handout with library users at various service points

Downloadable presentation slides, a facilitation guide, and a handout can be found below. The handout from this module has been translated into Chinese, Haitian-Creole, Russian, and Spanish.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module, learners will be able to:

    • Analyze the benefits and issues with using location settings
    • Use methods to better manage location settings

This lesson plan is also included in the downloadable facilitation guide below. You are welcome to use any and all of this, or adapt it as you see fit.

This module will take approximately 45 to 50 minutes to complete.

Introduction and welcome

Greet learners and review the plan for this module.

Define location-based services

Provide a definition for location-based services and see if anyone has any questions

Activity: Location-based services opinions

Have a conversation with learners and ask them to consider how they feel about location-based services and when location services might be helpful or intrusive and unnecessary

The pros and cons of location-based services

Explain how location-based services work. Review the pros and cons of sharing your location and pause to see if learners have anything else to add to these lists. Conclude this section by noting how common and pervasive location services are

Discussion: The pros and cons of location-based services

Hold a discussion with learners about their views on location-based services and the risks and benefits of them

Ways to manage location settings

Add to the recommendations you heard in the discussion just now by reviewing ways participants can adjust their location settings. See if learners have anything else to add or any questions as you go through these slides

Wrap up, final tips, and final questions

Review the closing thoughts and share the suggested resources. See if anyone has any final questions
